FUE Hair Transplant Surgery Arrives In Dubai Healthcare City
Hair loss can be upsetting, embarrassing and even distressing, and it is a problem shared by both
men and women, although manifesting itself in different ways. Over the years many solutions have
been developed to combat hair loss and to restore thinning areas of hair, each with a greater or
lesser degree of success. However, contemporary hair transplantation employing FUE technology
has been demonstrated to produce the most satisfying and permanent results.

FUE Hair Transplant Surgery has recently been introduced by Elite Plastic & Cosmetic Surgery Group clinic of Dubai Healthcare City (DHCC), being the latest addendum to an ever-growing range of surgical and non-surgical rejuvenation treatments, many of which are at the forefront of medical science and technology, and which have been introduced to meet the perceived needs of theincreasingly sophisticated and dynamic patient base both living in Dubai and also coming to Dubai from within the GCC group of countries and internationally, seeking specific medical treatments.
According to Dr Allen Rezai, Consultant Plastic & Reconstructive Surgeon of Harley Street, London, and also founder of Elite Plastic & Cosmetic Surgery Group in Dubai Healthcare City, a specialist in both surgical and non-surgical rejuvenation treatments, hair loss can be caused by one or a combination of several factors, some resulting in permanent hair loss, others in only temporary loss. Some factors are common to both men and women, whilst others are sex-dependent. These factors include thyroid or other hormonal imbalances, nutritional deficiencies, auto-immune disorders, medication side effects, hair and scalp trauma, stress and several others, including some related to the environment.
Dr Rezai points out, however, that before undergoing any form of treatment, diagnosis by a qualified professional is essential in order to determine the underlying cause or combination of causes for the loss of hair. But the commonest problem for which the majority of patients seek hair restoration is pattern hair loss, which occurs in both men and women. According to Dr Rezai, "Male pattern hair loss is the result of genetic factors, age and the action of male hormones. It is known medically as androgenic alopecia, since the gradual loss of hair with age is caused by the action of the male sex hormones, the androgens. The effect of androgens on the male hairline can begin as early as the teenage years and most men will have experienced some degree of pattern hair loss by the time they reach their fifties."Whilst hair loss is often considered to be a problem that typically affects men, women too can sufferfrom hair loss. Dr Rezai explains that "For women this can be particularly upsetting and can have a very negative impact on self-esteem. There are numerous medical conditions that can cause hair loss in women, many of which are also common to men. However in women hair loss can also be associated with other factors such as pregnancy and various hair fashions and product treatments. However, as with men, the most common cause of hair loss in women is inherited androgenic pattern baldness. But in women the pattern is usually different from that observed in men, taking theform of a diffuse thinning effect over the entire region of the scalp with the exception of the front hairline."urgery is a procedure in which hair is moved typically from the back or sides of thescalp where the hair is permanent to areas that are thinning or bald on the front, top or crown of the scalp. Once transplanted, the hair will continue to grow for a person's lifetime. According to Dr Rezai, FUE Hair Transplantation is the most modern and least invasive form of hair replacement surgery. "The initials FUE," says DR Rezai, "stand for Follicular Unit Extraction. This method of hair transplantation represents a significant improvement upon the older strip method, known by the initials FUT, short for Follicular Unit Transplantation. FUE is a very efficient form of hair replacement as none of the hairs that are extracted are wasted and the patient benefits from a surgical method that is the least invasive. In addition to standard FUE Hair Transplant Surgery, we are also able to provide Micro-FUE surgery, a pain-free advanced non-invasive technique that produces totally natural undetectable results, and achieves the maximum hair density possible per session with no scarring." FUE hair transplantation, explains Dr Rezai, involves removing healthy hair follicles directly from a donor area, typically on the scalp at the back of the head where the hair is plentiful, and grafting them onto the bald or thinning areas. The donor site will first be shaved, leaving only very short hairs. This area is then treated with a local anaesthetic. And before the grafts are harvested, tiny recipient sites are made in the balding area of the scalp using a fine needle-point instrument. The follicle extraction is itself carried out using a specialised punch less than 1mm in diameter to extractfollicular units complete with glands. This device seperates surrounding tissue from the unit, resulting in minimum trauma and better results, as well as avoiding detectable scarring. The follicular units are then placed into the recipient sites one unit at a time, where they will grow into healthy hair-producing follicles. Transplantation of all the vital elements of each hair follicle results in a better survival rate and better growth. The entire treatment is performed under a high-powered microscope allowing the surgeon to work with the utmost precision for natural-looking, undetectable results.
Dr Rezai observes that a hair transplant procedure can take anywhere from a couple hours to extract, say, 200 grafts for a scar correction to an extended surgery undertaken over two consecutivedays for transplanting 2,500 to 3,000 grafts. This is something that will be evaluated and discussed with patients at their initial consultation. Following the proceduree, rest is important in aiding recovery and a special hair washing technique employing baby shampoo will be required. It will also be necessary for patients to wear a protective cap when outdoors for at least 3 months following surgery to provide protection from the sun.
As to the results of FUE surgery, it will come as a surprise to many potential patients to learn that during the first two weeks, virtually all of the transplanted hairs, traumatized by their relocation, will fall out. "This is referred to as shock loss," explains Dr Rezai. "After two to three months, new hair will begin to grow from the moved follicles at the typical rate of 1cm per month. The patient's hair will grow normally and continue to thicken during the next six to ten months, after which period there will be an approximate 90% permanent uptake. Any subsequent hair loss is likely to be only from untreated areas. Some patients elect to use medications to retard such loss, while others will plan a follow-on transplant procedure to deal with this eventuality." s a highly effective technique resulting in healthy, natural looking hair. However the final result will always be influenced by a patient's genetics, balding pattern and the progression of hair loss. Nevertheless, Dr Rezai concludes that in spite of there being a very wide variety of readily-available alternative treatments for managing hair loss, the only method that offers permanent results is Hair Transplant Surgery. "Dependent upon the nature of the hair loss in individual patients," says Dr Rezai, "it will sometimes be advantageous to combine FUE surgery with supplementary treatments such as PRP therapy, Minoxidil and other medical treatments. We discuss the available options with each patient at consultation."
